The Mystery of RPM Fluctuation is Finally Solved

If you are driving any car that is manufactured after the year 2005, your idle RPM should rest somewhere between 700 and 800, but in case your car surges or stalls out, there's a problem that needs fixing immediately.

Why immediately? I'll share an incident that took place a couple of days ago, but before that, let's get to the bottom of this problem.

RPM fluctuation is caused by either a dirty throttle body or a dirty air control valve. In most modern cars, it’s because of the throttle body.

The primary function of a throttle body is to regulate the amount of air flowing into the engine. Over the months or years of driving, the throttle body collects dirt which hardens over time and obstructs the flow of air. This irregular airflow causes the RPM to fluctuate when the engine is idling.

Sounds like an easy fix? Yes, it is.

The solution is to clean the throttle body using a specialized throttle body cleaner. If you love to peek under the hood and don't mind a little grease under your nails, it'd a simple DIY fix for you.

Depending on the model and make of your car, the throttle body may be difficult to access, and you may have to pull the air intake assembly out of the way. That being said, it's important to have a screwdriver and a plier up your sleeves.

You can purchase the spray cleaner from your local automobile store or online and get things fixed in a jiffy.

Cleaning the throttle body is not an issue, but its obtrusive location is. So, it's better to have a reliable mechanic to do it for you so that there are no loose ends left to be tied up later.

What happens if you keep driving with a dirty throttle body?

Now let me share a personal experience with you which compelled me to write this article in the first place. So I noticed my car's RPM would fluctuate wildly, and since it didn't bother me too much, I never thought of getting it fixed – until one day when I was driving down the street and upon pressing the clutch, the RPM dropped below 500 RPM, and the engine almost stalled out. Due to which the power from the brakes was taken away and now I had to stand on the pedal to stop the car. All this happened within a few seconds, and luckily, I didn't crash into the car right ahead of me, as I was not going too fast.
So, at that time, it bothered me a little. Actually, it bothered me more than that, so much so that I got the throttle body cleaned the same day by a mechanic in Leichhardt. The car ran pretty smooth after that.

In case you notice RPM fluctuation in your vehicle, don't ignore it, for it's a disaster in the making.

How much does throttle body cleaning cost?

Throttle body cleaning won't cost you more than fixing a damaged bumper. Any mechanic in Rozelle would charge around $240 for the complete throttle body service. They will even look at other parts to make sure everything else is fine.

Do you have an RPM fluctuation experience to share? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
